Overview

A brief introduction to Shuswap Lake Provincial Park

Shuswap Lake (pronounced /ˈʃuːʃwɑːp/) is a lake located in the southern interior of British Columbia, Canada that drains via the Little Shuswap River into Little Shuswap Lake. Little Shuswap Lake is the source of the South Thompson River, a branch of the Thompson River, a tributary of the Fraser River. It is at the heart of a region known as the Columbia Shuswap or "the Shuswap", noted for its recreational lakeshore communities including the city of Salmon Arm. The name "Shuswap" is derived from the Shuswap or Secwepemc First Nations people, the most northern of the Interior Salish peoples, whose territory includes the Shuswap. The Shuswap call themselves /ʃǝxwépmǝx/ in their own language, which is called /ʃǝxwepmǝxtʃín/.

Utterly Amazing!

I have been coming to Shuswap Provincial Park since I was a child in the 1970s. Since then, it has been our yearly family get away with my own children beginning in May and throughout the summer. Last year we even camped on the Thanksgiving weekend and managed a full turkey dinner. The campsites are all surrounded by beautiful trees and feel private. The drive from Kamloops is quick and easy and even if we book a weeks stay, we are still able to drive home if needed. There have been several times we have tried other camp grounds, but Shuswap remains my favourite.

It is my summer home away from home!

One of the best

The perfect family campground! My little ones love the playgrounds and the bigger ones love the bike park they have there. While the beach is not sandy but pebbly/rocky, the water is clear and gorgeous. Bring your bikes! This is a big campground and that will be your primary mode of transportation. Most sites are fairly shady. Beware the time if year you go. Mosquitos have also discovered this is a great campground to hang out in
