The dreamiest park 🌄

Imagine yourself waking up to an incredible view right outside your front tent flap…this was June Lake! While the campground itself wasn’t super busy, we did manage to snag a mountain-view spot facing the lake and it was such an incredible experience going to bed among the stars and waking up to the lake in front of us. We gravel-biked a bit around the lake, and were thankful there were bear food storage lockers, although we didn’t encounter any bears. It was a little windy so keep that in mind if tenting. Definitely recommend June Lake especially for those in LA and surrounding area, we can’t wait to go back!

Camping on the water

Very few opportunities outside of backcountry that you can camp right on the water. This is a small campsite but thanks to CampNab I got one of the premier lakeside campsites twice this summer! Only downside is that it's close to the road so you get some noise but it's worth it. Walking distance to trails and to the June Lake Brewery.

Gorgeous area, well maintained campground

Epic scenery with tall mountain walls surrounding the camping area. I went with friends to hike the mountain and stayed at the portal campground for a few days to acclimate to the elevation and get in a few hikes. The sites were ample and the campground was extremely well-maintained. The camp hosts were very friendly and helpful. This would be a great place to camp even if I weren't hiking Whitney. Going downhill from the campground to explore the boulder fields and arid landscape below the mountain was a great day trip.

Gorgeous campground

We spent four nights here during the first week of August in 2023. The campground is well-maintained and it’s close to Mammoth. The views are stunning and the lake is gorgeous. I highly recommend this campground especially if it is your first time camping.

Breathtaking and conveniently located.

This campground is top notch. Each site surrounds the lake and there’s a beautiful waterfall pouring into the lake. Be bear aware and you’ll be good.

Our favorite campground

We love this campground so much we got engaged here! The staff are always helpful and the cabin/store at the portal to the Whitney hiking trail is a must see! The best pancakes and hot coffee in the morning. Creek running through the campsite is great for filtering to drink if you need. The trail to the waterfall is moderate and one of our favorite activities. There was a rock slide recently but no one was injured. They may still be doing work to remove some of the boulders off the trail. This area is popular with backpackers but it’s a great family campground.
