White River National Forest
White River National Forest in northwest Colorado is the most visited national forest in the United States, encompassing 2.3 million acres of diverse landscapes and offering a wide array of camping experiences. From developed campgrounds with modern amenities to dispersed backcountry sites for the adventurous, the forest caters to all types of campers.
The forest boasts numerous developed campgrounds, many of which accommodate both tents and RVs. These sites often provide amenities such as picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and drinking water. Some campgrounds also offer group sites and facilities for equestrian use. Reservations can typically be made up to six months in advance, and it's advisable to book early, especially during peak seasons. For detailed information on specific campgrounds and to make reservations, visit the White River National Forest Camping & Cabins page.
For those seeking solitude and a more primitive experience, dispersed camping is permitted throughout much of the forest. This type of camping is free and allows visitors to set up camp outside of developed areas. However, no amenities are provided, so campers must be self-sufficient and adhere to Leave No Trace principles. It's important to check for any local restrictions or guidelines before setting up a dispersed campsite. More information on dispersed camping can be found on the White River National Forest Dispersed Camping page.

Great views, sites are very close together for this type of campground.
Heaton Bay Campground offers a serene escape amidst nature's grandeur. Nestled beside the picturesque Dillon Reservoir in Colorado, it boasts stunning lake and mountain views. The campground is well-maintained, featuring spacious and clean sites suitable for tents and RVs. The C loop offers water and electric hookups and some sites can fit large rigs. Campers appreciate the peaceful ambiance and easy access to various outdoor activities, including fishing, hiking, and boating. The facilities are commendable, with clean restrooms and friendly staff. Reservations are highly recommended due to its popularity, although since people reserve 6 months in advance, be sure to use CAMPNAB for notifications of cancelled sites if you don't have a reservation. Heaton Bay Campground provides an idyllic retreat, making it a top choice for nature enthusiasts and campers looking for a memorable wilderness experience. Combined with this, the campground has access to a great community with all the resources you need - shopping, restaurants, places of worship, and culture.
Great campground with great views! We stayed in the loop with electric and water hookups. Site clean, outside critter proof food storage, and friendly on site volunteers. Only negative is there is no dump station there. You have to go into Silverthorne at the waste management center when they open.
We've been here several times - it is walkable (albeit not a short walk) to downtown Frisco and is a typical NFS campground. Sites in loop B and C are on the lake and mostly well spaced, and a few, like #46, have a direct lake view. No hookups, but plenty of sun for solar; this is an area of re-growth and so while well wooded, the trees aren't tall. The views of Peak One are great from most sites. It is also close to the Frisco Adventure Park. Overall a great base for all of the fun of Summit County.
This campground is an excellent base camp for your trip to the Dillon-Silverthorne area. Has an excellent bike path that goes right through the campground. Only the C Loop has electricity and water at the campsites. Must reserve 6 months in advance to get a site. We used Campnab when visiting last year and was able to score last minute cancelled sites. We were impressed at how great the Campnab app worked. Will continue to use!
We have camped at Peak One several times, when attending Mountain Biking races. It's a great spot. Right next to the water of Dillon Reservoir.
Good location to Vail and Avon.
