Lost Dutchman
Located just 40 miles east of Phoenix, Lost Dutchman State Park is one of Arizona’s most iconic camping destinations. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Superstition Mountains in the Sonoran Desert, this 320-acre park is named after the legendary Lost Dutchman Gold Mine—said to be hidden somewhere in the rugged terrain. Whether you're an RV camper, tent camper, or simply looking for a quiet desert getaway, Lost Dutchman offers stunning views, modern amenities, and excellent outdoor recreation.
Lost Dutchman State Park Campground Overview
The campground at Lost Dutchman State Park features 135 campsites, with 68 offering water and electric hookups (50/30/20 amp service). The remaining are dry sites suitable for tents, trailers, and RVs. All campsites include a picnic table, fire ring with adjustable grill, and are laid out on paved loops with some degree of privacy from native desert vegetation. There are no RV length restrictions, and most sites are back-in accessible.
In addition to campsites, the park offers five air-conditioned cabins that sleep up to six people. Each cabin includes electricity, lighting, heating, cooling, covered porches, and outdoor picnic areas. Guests must bring their own bedding and linens, and bathhouses are a short walk away.
The park also provides three hike/bike-in sites for those seeking more solitude, as well as two group camping areas. The main group area accommodates RVs and tents, while the Roadrunner Group Area is limited to tent campers only.
Reservations and Fees
Reservations are highly recommended and can be made up to a year in advance online or by calling the Arizona State Parks reservation line. There is a $3.60 non-refundable reservation fee per campsite, and a $15 fee per night for a second vehicle, unless the second vehicle is towed. The campground tends to fill up quickly during peak season (January to mid-April), so booking early is important.
Check-in is at 2:00 PM, and check-out is by 12:00 PM. Arriving before noon may result in a separate entrance fee.
Campground Amenities
Lost Dutchman is well-equipped with modern conveniences for campers, including:
Clean restrooms with flush toilets
Free hot showers
A dump station
Utility sinks
Drinking water spigots
Recycling bins and dumpsters
Pet-friendly campsites (leashes required)
Gift shop and ranger station for snacks, maps, and souvenirs
Firewood is not sold at the entrance, but campground hosts often have it available for $7 per bundle. Generator use is permitted between 8:00 AM and 9:00 PM. Wi-Fi is not available in the campground, but cell service is generally reliable.
Tent Camping Tips
While tent camping is allowed at all campsites, most sites are designed with RVs in mind. Tent pads vary in size and may require some creativity to fit larger tents, especially at more compact sites. Restroom access can also vary depending on location. The best tent camping experience is often found in centrally located sites near washhouses or in the hike/bike-in and group areas. Booking in advance allows you to select a site that fits your gear and comfort level.

Things to Do Around the Park
There’s no shortage of activities both inside and near the park. Wildlife watching is excellent—look for coyotes, mule deer, roadrunners, bobcats, and even Gila monsters. Stargazing is popular, especially during scheduled Star Parties. You can also try earthcaching, a GPS-based scavenger hunt with educational value and no impact on the environment.
