Overview

A brief introduction to Cloudland Canyon State Park

Cloudland Canyon State Park is a 3,485 acres (14.10 km2) Georgia state park located near Trenton and Cooper Heights on the western edge of Lookout Mountain. One of the largest and most scenic parks in Georgia, it contains rugged geology, and offers visitors a range of vistas across the deep gorge cut through the mountain by Sitton Gulch Creek, where the elevation varies from 800 to over 1,800 feet. Views of the canyon can be seen from the picnic area parking lot, in addition to additional views located along the rim trail. At the bottom of the gorge, two waterfalls cascade across layers of sandstone and shale, ending in small pools below.
The park, previously known as Sitton Gulch (or Gulf) or Trenton Gulf, was purchased in stages by the state of Georgia beginning in 1938. Under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, a project of Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression built the first facilities and signs in the park, which opened the following year. Today the park features a variety of campsites, cabins, hiking and recreational activities.

Camper reviews for Cloudland Canyon State Park

Nice place to get away from it all!

We really enjoyed camping at Cloudland Canyon.  We took our first trip in our new Casita camper there in August of 2020, but returned again several times.  Book on the west rim, as there is more privacy and space between campsites.  Clean facilities and well kept state park overall.  Lots to see in the park if you like hiking; beautiful views of the canyon and waterfalls.  Lulu Land Trust is a short drive from the campground, which  has a breathtaking waterfall (reservation needed).   Chattanooga, TN is 30 minutes away if you are up for a day in town.

Incredible Scenery in North Georgia

Add Cloudland Canyon to your camping list! There are 2 RV/tent loops with the East Rim being the closest to hiking trails and epic views and the West Rim quieter and tucked back into the woods. There is also a tent only area, primitive campsites, cabins, yurts, and group sites so you’re sure to find exactly what you need! The RV/tent sites have water, electric, fire pits, grills, and picnic tables. Each loop has a dump station plus gray water drains situated around for dishwater etc. They have just renovated and enlarged the sites and added a brand new bathhouse (with heat!) and laundry. If you get bored looking at the incredible canyon and waterfalls, there are many trails (some easy and paved, some strenuous), caving, disc golf, tons of biking trails, and Chattanooga is about 30 minutes away. Go see Ruby Falls and Rock City! We consistently had 2 bars on both ATT and T-Mobile for keeping up with March Madness however the tower is on the next mountain over so it depends on your line of sight.
