Overview
A brief introduction to Red Top Mountain State Park
Red Top Mountain State Park is a state park in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is located in the Northwestern part of the state, on the northwestern edge of metro Atlanta, in Southeastern Bartow County near Cartersville. Named for iron-rich Red Top Mountain, the park covers 1,776 acres (6.32 km2) on a peninsula jutting north into Lake Allatoona, formed on the park's north and east sides by the Etowah River arm and on the west by Allatoona Creek arm.
During the 1864 Atlanta Campaign of the American Civil War, the Battle of Allatoona Pass was fought on a battlefield near the park. (The battle of Allatoona Pass National Historical Registry Marker is across Lake Allatoona on the south side, off Allatoona Road, or the Emerson exit off Interstate 75.) The park's main popularity however comes from being near Atlanta, and just off Interstate 75. It is one of the most-visited parks in the state. A modern lodge was constructed in 1985, but closed on June 30, 2010, along with the restaurant and conference rooms due to statewide budget cuts.

Enjoyed our week long stay
We were here for a conference at Kennesaw State and enjoyed having the flexibility of the camper instead of a sterile hotel. We were glad to have snagged a FHU pull thru in the first loop for our 24’ camper. The deeper loops had a BEAUTIFUL view of the woods and lake. There are many sites that will fit vans and tents but not larger rigs so check the details on each site. Each site has a picnic table, elec/water, and a fire pit with grill. There are 4 bath houses scattered among the loops, each with 2 family rooms in addition to the men’s/women’s rooms. Road noise was present but not bad. Very glad to have the security of a gate code 24/7 to keep day use visitors out. Bath house was not air conditioned but well stocked and tidy. We did laundry twice and the equipment was in good condition. The star of the show was ALL THE DEER! We saw 8 the first evening alone! Each morning and evening we had deer walking along the path by our camper. Many of the sites are either up or down hill so take it slow with trailers. Hosts were friendly. One downside is that the campground is separated from the day use and hiking areas by a busy road with no bike path so we didn’t get to visit those areas. We will add this to our list for when we can get this far north again!
Huge park. Lots of things to do!
This park has great hiking trails for beginners. A ranger station where they do activities for the kids and things like I will calls at night. Lots of amenities and beauty on the lake. Make sure you stop in to the ranger station and little gift shop. Grab a map and have fun hiking! So many trails!
