Overview

A brief introduction to Steamboat Lake State Park

Steamboat Lake State Park is a Colorado state park located in Routt County 27 miles (43 km) north of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and near the community of Hahns Peak Village. The 2,820-acre (1,140 ha) park land west of Hahns Peak was acquired in 1966. It and the 1,101 acres (446 ha) reservoir was opened to the public in 1972. As of 2021 park facilities include a visitors center, a marina, boat ramps, campsites, cabins, picnic sites and 5.5 miles (8.9 km) of hiking trails. Plant communities include sagebrush shrubland, quaking aspen and lodgepole pine forests, willow carr and marsh. Commonly seen mammalian wildlife species include mule deer and red fox. The reservoir attracts many species of shorebirds and waterfowl, including sandhill cranes that nest in the wetland areas.
The reservoir creating the lake on Willow Creek was completed in 1967 and is fed by many streams including Mill Creek, Floyd Creek, Larson Creek, Dutch Creek, and Deep Creek. Though used for recreation the construction of the dam was partly funded by the owners of the Hayden Generation Station to provide water to cool generators. The present location of the park was homesteaded by James and Rose Wheeler in 1921. The original location of the Wheeler's home was covered by the creation of the lake.

Camper reviews for Steamboat Lake State Park

If only all campgrounds could be like this!

This is one of the nicest campgrounds we have been to in CO. Several different campgrounds surround the beautiful Steamboat Lake. Our fave is Wheeler as it seems closest to the water. The other campgrounds have really nice views, but its a climb down a pretty good hill to and from the lake. Some sites are basic in the park, but Wheeler all have electric which we prefer. 30,50 AMP. Convenient and clean water and dump stations, also free. Fairly level sites, picnic tables at all and fire rings, easy to navigate with a little extra room for a tent if you want. Road to and all around the grounds are good. There are FREE showers and restrooms, really clean and convenient. The camp host in 2022 was so nice and so helpful. There is potable water for share use close to all sites. The lake itself is amazing - clean, clear and so much room! Nice swim beach area, yes, it get crowded but if you kayak or SUP you can easily get away from the crowds. There are motor boats allowed but the lake is big so you can also enjoy peace and quiet with lots of birds and beautiful views. There is a small camp store with firewood and necessities, like ice cream! Also boat rentals, SUP and kayak rentals are available. A wonderful place to enjoy swimmable water and gorgeous night skies in CO!
